The Science of Wine: Advancements in Wine Making

Throughout history, certain scientific advances have directly influenced the production of wine. In fact, Without many of these developments, wine as we know it would not exist today without many of these developments.

Three major accomplishments that greatly influenced the growth of wine as a worldwide industry are improvements in bottle making, the production of accessories (such as the cork and corkscrew) and the discovery of Champagne.

Wine and Health
While Europeans have long included wine as a key part of their diets, Americans have recently jumped on board due to research that has pointed out the health benefits of wine. According to these studies, a few glasses of wine per day can significantly promote heart health. Similarly, wine can also reduce the risk of cancer, as well as preventing LDL (bad) cholesterol from clogging arteries.

Along with these concrete health advantages, wine can do wonders for mental and emotional well being by calming nerves and reducing anxiety. Not only has wine long been a part of social circles and cultural celebrations, but it is now taking on an important role in the medical community.

Wine Climate
Long before a glass ever touches your lips, a large degree of carefully calculated science goes into producing the beverage. One of the key components of wine’s character resides in the type of grape the winemaker uses. However, the climate in which the grape is grown directly affects the quality of grape and, therefore, the resulting wine.

Because the climate of a region varies depending on the time of year, some vineyards only make wine in certain seasons. Others, if they produce wine year round, may produce particular varieties of wine during specific seasons.

Wine Storage Science
Like wine climate, wine storage involves some scientific consideration. Storage spaces for wine should be not only dark but also cool. Similarly, wine bottles are generally stored on their sides and should be rotated periodically to reduce the amount of sediment in the liquid. Knowing the type of space in which to store wine is key to preventing it from spoiling.

Other Advancements in Wine Technology
Along with the science of producing and storing wine, other technology had to come into play in order to make wine widely accessible today. In fact, without advancements in the making of wine bottles, as well as in corking, bottles of wine couldn’t be distributed and sold throughout the world.
